Falling Free {Review}

The must read book of the year released this week. And that is not an exaggeration. You need  to make it a priority to pick up a copy of Falling Free:  Rescued from the Life I Always Wanted by Shannan Martin and soak it up. It was one of those books that leaves you forever impacted. If you’ve read Crazy Love by Francis Chan or Radical by David Platt, this is along those lines in terms of content and potential influence. But Falling Free is more of a personal story of living out the Biblical commands given to disciples of Jesus. It is a modern memoir of the cost of discipleship. It is intriguing, empowering, convicting, challenging. It is filled with truth and grace and courage and transparency and humor. And it is well worth every dollar and every minute you spend on it because I guarantee it will point you to the real Jesus and help you evaluate if your life matches what His Kingdom values.

Shannan writes about everything from family and finances, to church and community. She splits it into ten chapters:

Chapter 1:  Get Risky
Chapter 2:  Redefine Family
Chapter 3:  Have less
Chapter 4:  Unplan
Chapter 5:  Live Small
Chapter 6:  Gather
Chapter 7:  Open the Door
Chapter 8:  Grow Together
Chapter 9:  Commune
Chapter 10:  Give More

And each chapter is overflowing with wisdom she has gained through learning and living. Each page is filled with a beautiful, raw honesty. I so appreciated all Shannan wrote about and the way she wrote. Her words are not always easy to think through as they'll make you consider how your own life resembles the life of Jesus, but they are definitely necessary to read and process. Falling Free is such a gift.

I read the digital copy of this book and found that I couldn't just read through it quickly. I had to take time to dwell on Shannan's words and process them. I wrote down many memorable quotes in a journal from it, and realized I was practically copying down the entire book. This is one I most definitely need the physical copy of and will go back through again and again.

Falling Free will be one of my go to book recommendations for quite some time. It needs to be read and shared, discussed and contemplated. Hopefully it will lead you to pray about how to more deeply align your heart with the heart of Jesus and align your values with the Kingdom values. This is a book that will make a difference in many lives for many years to come.

Thank you, Shannan, for generously sharing your life with your readers. Your life displays the gospel. And your willingness to write down so much of what the Lord has brought you through and taught you will most certainly spur others to fall more in love with Jesus. And your words will most certainly inspire gospel-centered change in communities.

I just got a copy of "Falling Free". After reading your review here, I am eager to start reading and contemplating it. I love books that require contemplation! I just finished Shelly Miller's book "Rhythms of Rest" on Sabbath time, and it is one of those contemplating books too! Once I read "Falling Free", I will write a review on my blog too.
